Rajya Sabha bypoll: BJP leader and ex-Bihar deputy CM Sushil Modi files nomination | India News

PATNA: Senior BJP leader and former Bihar deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi on Wednesday filed nomination as the NDA candidate for the by-election to a Rajya Sabha seat in the state.
Modi filed his nomination papers before Patna divisional commissioner Sanjay Kumar Agarwal who is returning officer for the Rajya Sabha bypoll.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and BJP sate president Sanjay Jaisawal also were present in the divisional commissioner’s office when Sushil Modi (SuMo) submitted his nomination papers.
The Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant following the death of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) founder and Union minister of consumer affairs, food and public distribution Ram Vilas Paswan on October 8 this year.
68-year old Sushil Modi’s election to the Upper House of the Parliament is almost certain as the BJP-led NDA has a clear-cut majority in the state assembly. The NDA has 125 MLAs in the 243-member assembly while the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan has 110 MLAs.
Voting for the RS seat will be held on December 14 if the rival Mahagathbandhan decides to contest the bypoll.
Earlier on Friday, the BJP named Sushil Modi as its candidate for the byelection to the Rajya Sabha seat.
“The BJP’s central election committee has given its approval on only one name—Sushil Kumar Modi- as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-poll in Bihar,” the party’s national general secretary Arun Singh had said on Friday.
Earlier on November 15, the BJP, in a surprise move, had decided that SuMo, its most prominent leader in Bihar, would not continue as the deputy CM for one more term along with CM Nitish Kumar.
Sushil Modi was replaced by BJP’s two less prominent leaders—Katihar MLA Tarkishore Prasad and Bettiah legislator Renu Devi.
