Gurpurab Significance and Celebrations
According to the Bikrami calendar, Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was born on Puranmashi of Kattak in 1469 in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi in the present Shekhupura District of Pakistan, now Nankana Sahib. The celebration of Guru Nanak Jayanti or Gurpurab begins a few days prior to the Kartik Purnima. Check out the details below:
Akhand Path: Two days before the Guru Nanak Jayanti, Akhand Path, a forty-eight-hour non-stop reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs, is held in the Gurdwaras.
Nagarkirtan: A day prior to the birthday, a procession known as Nagarkirtan is organised, led by the Panj Pyaras carrying the Sikh flag, known as the Nishan Sahib and the Palki (Palanquin) of Guru Granth Sahib.
Gurpurab day: The day of Gurpurab begins with the morning hymns, followed by any combination of Kathas and Kirtan in the praise of the Guru. Later, a special community lunch (Langar) is organised followed by night prayer sessions at Gurudwaras.
