The animated Netflix show Pacific Rim: The Black has been renewed for a Season 2. The series is a spin-off from the live-action Pacific Rim movies, and Season 1 was released last month.
Pacific Rim: The Black Season 2 was confirmed on Twitter by the franchise’s official account. The tweet shows the two main characters–teenage siblings Taylor and Hayley–in their Jaeger, as a huge kaiju lumbers towards them. Check it out below.
Season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet. The show is produced by Tokyo-based anime studio Polygon Pictures, who also made the three recent Godzilla anime series as well as Star Wars Resistance. The showrunners on Season 1 were Craig Kyle and Greg Johnson, who previously worked on animated Marvel shows such as Ultimate Avengers and X-Men: Evolution.
The first Pacific Rim was directed by Guillermo Del Toro and was released in 2013. Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight took over for 2018’s Pacific Rim: Uprising, but that film was met with mixed reviews and was a box office disappointment. In his review for GameSpot, Michael Rougeau stated that it “simply can’t escape its predecessor’s massive shadow.”
In related news, Del Toro has two new movies set for release later this year. One is a stop-motion animated version of Pinocchio for Netflix, with a voice cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, and John Turturro. He’s also directed a remake of the classic 1947 thriller Nightmare Alley. That movie stars Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Willem Dafoe, and it arrives in December.
